Together with the Steinhuder Meer Ecological Protection Station, the NABU and Volkswagen Leasing GmbH are actively engaged in protecting the Lichtenmoor. The first signs of success could be seen in the restoration of 130 hectares of moorland in the Weißer Graben nature reserve. The task here was to close up existing and still functioning drainage ditches. This area has a special importance because of the cranes that can be seen resting here in their thousands during their migration. A second project under preparation in the Lichtenmoor involves the Holtorfer Moor nature reserve. An agrological examination of climate-relevant gas exchange has shown that emissions of more than 150,000 metric tons of CO2 can be avoided in the long-term through a complete rewetting of this project area.
